Justice Minister Yoshihisa Furukawa warned Ukrainian refugees against working in hostess clubs and the adult entertainment industry.

He said on Friday that it is not uncommon for Ukrainian women who have come to Japan to work in hostess clubs and other adult entertainment venues. He warned that such work is not allowed under the visa status of refugees from Ukraine coming to Japan.
“There have been cases where evacuees (from Ukraine) have worked in certain types of establishments where they are not allowed to work,” Furukawa said after the cabinet meeting.
A total of 1,055 Ukrainians had fled to Japan as of Wednesday, according to government figures. The evacuees are allowed to switch to a visa status that allows them to stay in Japan for a year and work.

But their residence status does not allow them to work in hostess clubs, bars or adult entertainment establishments that are restricted by the adult entertainment law.

Furukawa said the Immigration Service Agency sent out written notices to Ukrainian evacuees to let them know such work was a violation of their visa status.
