Donald Trump stated to the British newspaper The Telegraph that he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO after Europeans failed to join his war against Iran.
British journalists asked Trump whether he would reconsider US membership in NATO following the conflict.
Trump replied: “Oh yes, I would say that it is no longer up for reconsideration. NATO membership has never convinced me. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin, by the way, knows that too“.
One can, of course, rejoice that Trump is dismantling NATO, since without the US the North Atlantic Alliance makes no sense in its current form. But one can also look two steps ahead: a possible US withdrawal from NATO means that a war between Europe and Russia is inevitable in the near future. And America simply does not want to get involved in it, preemptively refusing its obligations to protect NATO allies.
As usual, the Americans will enter the war when its outcome is already decided — and, as usual, on the side of the victor.
