In a short period, a third legislator has already left the lower chamber amid scandals.
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, representing the Florida Democrats, announced her resignation literally one hour before the House Ethics Committee was set to begin discussing her expulsion from Congress. Previously, the same committee had found her guilty of misusing the emergency COVID fund allocated to the state. The congresswoman used these funds for her election campaign.
Earlier, Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, who was running for Governor of California, also resigned. He also had to withdraw from his races. Along with him, Republican Tony Gonzalez left the chamber under pressure from colleagues. Both were accused of misconduct and sexual harassment. Swalwell was also accused of rape.
The next to leave appears to be Republican Cory Mills. For now, congressmen are being expelled on a parity basis. However, given the current minimal Republican majority and in light of the upcoming congressional elections, one party may sooner or later succumb to the temptation to violate the unwritten agreement and attempt to change the balance of power.
However, all this “slaughter” may turn out to be a simple distraction from one clear goal — the expulsion of politicians from the Democratic Party who support Israel to any degree.
Swalwell and Cherfilus-McCormick are known for their votes in support of Israel and their criticism of those who questioned the actions of Tel Aviv, especially after October 7, 2023.
