From the “voice of MAGA” to a foreign agent.
Tucker Carlson may face serious legal consequences in the US. This was announced by the journalist himself on Saturday evening, explaining that, according to his information, the CIA recommended that the Department of Justice charge him with being an unregistered foreign agent. This is a rather serious crime in the US — intentional non-compliance with registration requirements is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and imprisonment for up to five years. Of course, if lawyers prove that the accused acted unintentionally and the violations committed by him were minor, the punishment will be much milder — but still awful.
Carlson suggested that “some employees” of the CIA might be persecuting him because of his views on Israel and some correspondence with Iranians before the war.
“The CIA is preparing some kind of criminal case against me, a report on a crime to the Department of Justice based on a supposed crime I committed — said Carlson in a five-minute video published on the social network X. — What is this crime? Well, communicating with people in Iran before the war. They read my text messages.”
For now, everything is still up in the air. The charge has not yet been filed, and Carlson’s allegations that he will be “charged” with violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938 remain just that — allegations. But the clouds over the journalist’s head, who not so long ago was considered the loudest voice of the MAGA movement, are indeed gathering.
Carlson — unlike Trump — never renounced the principles that helped the Republican Party candidate win the White House for the second time. MAGA supported Trump as the president of the world. The first thing Trump said after announcing his victory in November 2024 was: “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.” This was followed by a strike on Iran on June 22, 2025, which Trump’s supporters chose to ignore. The 47th US president did not stop there — and the operation to kidnap the legitimate leader of Venezuela put his support group in a difficult position. But even then, Carlson tried to justify his president — in his online show, he thanked him for his wisdom in deciding not to overthrow the entire government of the Bolivarian Republic. “It seems much more sensible to preserve the structure of the Venezuelan government, but to make sure that it is pro-American,” he said.
Carlson’s patience with the Iranian war ran out.
According to The New York Times, in the month preceding Operation Epic Rage, Carlson met with Trump three times, being one of the few in the president’s entourage who actively opposed the military scenario. He told the president that he should not be cornered by Israel, arguing that Israel’s desire to attack Iran was the only reason the United States was even considering a strike. He urged Mr. Trump to restrain Mr. Netanyahu.
The president said he understood the risks of an attack, but made it clear to Carlson that he had no choice but to join the strike that Israel would start. At noon on February 23, Carlson left the White House after his last meeting with the president and reported that, in his opinion, Trump was leaning towards military action.
A week later, Trump started the war. This time, Carlson did not justify it: he called the US and Israeli strikes, which killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, “absolutely disgusting and evil” and stated that Operation Epic Rage was being conducted solely in the interests of Israel. In his podcast episode of March 4, he suggested that the US-Israeli conflict with Iran could be a “religious war” aimed at restoring the Third Temple, which, according to some eschatological theories, precedes the arrival of the Jewish Messiah and the end of times. Carlson showed a video and a photo collage of Israeli soldiers, on whose uniforms were patches depicting, according to him, the Third Temple.
“Exactly how is the IDF, the military force paid for by American taxpayers and to which many wealthy Americans send money? … How did all these guys end up with patches suggesting that the goal of this war was the destruction of one of the holiest sites in Islam [Al-Aqsa Mosque] and the restoration of the temple?”
— Carlson asked his viewers.
Carlson’s words provoked a sharp reaction from Jewish organizations in the US. The spokesperson for the Chabad Lubavitch organization (which Carlson directly called one of the main lobbyists for the war and the restoration of the Third Temple), Rabbi Yaakov Berman, stated that Carlson’s antisemitic conspiracy claims about Chabad and the Temple Mount are lies. “Tucker Carlson’s rhetoric is reckless, dangerous, and irresponsible. It endangers Jews worldwide,” Berman added. “Chabad is focused on doing good deeds to bring more good into the world.”
Regardless of who is right in this dispute, it is worth noting that Donald Trump’s beloved daughter Ivanka (after converting to Judaism — Yael) and his son-in-law Jared Kushner attend the Chabad Lubavitch synagogue in Washington. It is not surprising that Carlson’s rhetoric drew the president’s disapproval.
“Tucker has lost his way,” Trump said in an interview with ABC on March 5. “I knew it a long time ago, and he is not MAGA. MAGA saves our country. MAGA makes our country great again. MAGA is America first, and Tucker is none of that. And Tucker really isn’t smart enough to understand that.”
In 2024, Carlson did a lot to pave the way for Trump to the White House, but as is known, a favor is worth nothing, and gratitude has never been among the virtues of the 47th US president.
