The basis was a social media post that could mean a call to assassinate the US president.
Former FBI Director and longtime Trump foe James Comey posted a photo on his social media account from his vacation in the Seychelles, where the numbers “8647” were laid out in the sand using shells. Trump supporters believed that the sequence of numbers meant “kill the 47th president of the United States.”
According to Cassell’s Dictionary of American Slang, “86” in verb form can mean “kill,” “execute by judicial process.”
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem (who oversees the US Secret Service) said that Comey is now under investigation for “threatening the president.” FBI Director Cash Patel wrote on his social media account that the Bureau was “aware” of the publication.
Comey himself said that he didn’t mean “anything like that” and simply “posted a photo of shells that formed a shape that could have political significance” and deleted his post with the photo.
Actually, there is something to put James Comey in jail for, even without any shells or slang explanations. The question is not why Trump’s political enemies are being prosecuted for a social media post and shells. The question is why they are not being prosecuted for obvious crimes.
