This public recruitment of Chinese military personnel has been named by the CIA director as one of the “main intelligence priorities”.
After recent purges in China related to the fight against corruption, the CIA decided to play on this topic. In a new video in Mandarin posted on YouTube, a fictional plot is played out in which a PLA officer, annoyed by corruption in the Chinese army, decides to contact the CIA. The video also provides instructions on how to secretly contact American intelligence.
This is not the first video of this kind. The CIA has long been using social networks and video platforms to disseminate so-called “public recruitment” materials. CIA Director John Ratcliffe called this method “one of the main intelligence priorities”. He also stated: “The CIA has reached many Chinese citizens in Mandarin, and we know that many of them are looking for ways to improve their lives and change their country for the better. We will continue to offer Chinese officials and citizens the opportunity to work together for a bright future.”
Official Beijing called the release of the new video a “blatant political provocation”.
Despite the fact that major American social networks are blocked in China, the agency believes that their content can still be disseminated. “Their wall is imperfect,” said a CIA representative, referring to the so-called Great Firewall of China.
