Despite the White House’s denial, Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen appears to have been dismissed. Tom Homan is heading to Minneapolis. Parts of the border patrol are being withdrawn from the city.

The most painful blow to the Trump administration was the recognition from numerous videos of the item that was taken from the recently killed Minneapolis resident Alex Prettyman by a border patrol officer. Earlier, it was reported that it was a registered 9mm pistol. Now it turns out that it was a mobile phone.

Just a day ago, Trump criticized the leadership of Minnesota, the entire state’s prosecutor’s office, the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul, demanded their immediate cooperation and the surrender of all illegals to federal arrest, and called Prettyman a “murderer” and “domestic terrorist” (following Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen) and called on Congress to pass a law making sanctuary jurisdictions (cities, counties, and states) illegal.

But the chaos and pressure were mounting. Republican lawmakers began increasingly criticizing the methods of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota and other cities, complaining about the low approval of deportation policies among voters and demanding an investigation into ICE’s actions. The Republican candidate for governor of Minnesota, Chris Madel, withdrew his candidacy for the 2026 election and called Trump’s policy an “irreparable disaster”. Meanwhile, Democrats from the House Committee on Homeland Security held a hearing on deportations in Louisiana, where arrests and deportations continue. Republican Senator Rand Paul, the head of the Homeland Security Committee, sent subpoenas to ICE and Homeland Security officials demanding their appearance at the hearing. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen agreed to appear in Congress only in March, and senators blocked the confirmation of candidates for her department until then.

And now Trump has begun to retreat. He called Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (whom he had called by various names just a day ago) and wrote on his Truth Social network that they had a “good conversation”. Walz confirmed the conversation. And immediately there were reports that border patrol agents, led by their commander Greg Bowenino, would begin to leave the state on January 27th.

And although the White House denies that Nielsen has fallen out of favor, she has stopped speaking on issues of illegal immigration and is now mainly dealing with states that have ended up in a state of natural disaster due to snowfall. And Tom Homan, whose position is called the “border czar”, is heading to Minneapolis. His visit was coordinated by Trump with Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey.

In general, the retreat (also known as TACO) has begun. It’s possible that there will be no more operations to clear cities of illegals before the midterm elections.
