Is Trump Withdrawing from Minneapolis?

This is not yet a collapse, but it very much resembles the beginning of a management meltdown.

Bovino is returning to his previous duty station and will soon be dismissed altogether. Perhaps his patrons from the Department of Homeland Security will also lose their jobs.

COMMANDER OF BORDER PATROL OPERATIONS GREG BOVINO REMOVED

Greg Bovino has been serving in the US Border Patrol (USBP) since 1996. He was quickly promoted to commander of a tactical group that conducted arrests in raids to capture illegals in Nevada, Louisiana, and California. Each time, he was “reprimanded” for political reasons. During Trump’s second term, he was promoted to “commander-in-chief” of the border patrol — responsible for all tactical operations in cooperation with ICE. Bovino reports directly to DHS Director Kristen Nieman.

Bovino was sent to Los Angeles. After the mission failed, he was sent to Chicago, but the feds had to retreat from there too. He then appeared in North Carolina, Louisiana, and Minnesota. In January 2025, he became one of the faces of the anti-immigrant operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Then Rene Good and Alex Pretti were killed. A wave of criticism (including from Republican Party congressmen) forced Trump to begin withdrawing from Minnesota.

And now, according to sources from The Atlantic, Bovino is being removed from his position as “commander” and sent to his formal duty station in El Centro, California, where he is expected to write a resignation report. Well, he himself said in a 2025 interview with Associated Press that he would retire to North Carolina to grow apples after completing his service. Bovino’s term ends in 2027.

It’s possible that Homeland Security Secretary Kristen Nieman and her close advisor Corey Lewandowski (who was with Trump during his first term), who were Bovino’s main patrons in the DHS, also risk losing their positions.

This is not yet a collapse, but it very much resembles the beginning of a management meltdown. Given Trump’s character and the experience of his first term, the consequences could be anything from a shake-up of the entire team and its replacement with more mainstream figures (in an attempt to stabilize the situation) to abrupt actions in any unexpected direction.

TRUMP SO FAR RESPONDS “NO” TO CALLS TO FIRE DHS HEAD

But the pressure is mounting. Democrats are targeting the minister’s impeachment, the department’s budget is at risk, and a story about “interference” in the Minnesota elections is unfolding.

Donald Trump was asked if he was considering firing DHS head Kirstjen Nielsen amid the events in Minnesota, where the department’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US Border Patrol (USBP) have come under fire after the deaths of two US citizens at the hands of federal agents. He initially replied briefly “No“, but later said she “is doing a great job“.

However, the pressure on the administration — to effect personnel changes and, more importantly, to change immigration and deportation policy — is mounting. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that if Nielsen is not fired, she will be impeached. The Senate Democratic leader has joined this call. A Republican vote on this issue may not be as clear-cut as it was a month ago. But impeachment is a long and thankless process, while defunding ICE as part of the budget process before a major overhaul could gain bipartisan support. If Republicans dig their heels in, a partial shutdown — specifically targeting ICE — could occur.

In Minnesota, “putting out the fire” has been sent by “the king of the border“, Tom Homan (Nielsen was “shuffled off to snowstorms in the southern US“). Negotiations with local authorities have begun, who are reluctant to give in and withdraw their demands for a full withdrawal of federal forces from the state. Thus, Homan met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and after the meeting, it was agreed to “continue the dialogue“.

However, the governor’s office issued a statement saying that Walz reiterated the state’s unconditional demands: “an impartial investigation into the shootings in Minneapolis involving federal agents, a rapid and significant reduction in the number of federal forces in Minnesota, and an end to the campaign of retaliation against Minnesota“. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said after meeting with Homan that he “made it clear that Minneapolis does not and will not comply with federal immigration laws“.

Apparently, the task of sanitizing the criminal investigation against Governor Walz and other Minnesota officials is being carried out simultaneously. The Justice Department’s request for data necessary to continue the investigation has been rejected by the state.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon released a fragment of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s letter to state authorities, in which she demanded, in addition to ending the provision of asylum to illegals, access to data on Medicaid and Food and Nutrition Service programs, as well as voter lists, “to confirm that the practice of voter registration in Minnesota complies with federal law“. Simon replied with a refusal and stated that everything is being done to “interfere with the state elections in November“.

In a nutshell: “We will not comply. Just leave.
