According to the US Secretary of State, Ukraine and its allies are trying to sabotage the end of this conflict.
Appearing on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News, he himself brought up the essence of the conflict, also giving a rebuke to “Ukraine’s allies on Capitol Hill and elsewhere.” Hannity asked: what was that last Friday in the Oval Office?
Rubio immediately shifted the focus:
“What’s important to understand about what happened last Friday is that it’s not about what happened last Friday. It’s everything that led up to it. It’s been very clear from the beginning that President Trump views this as a protracted, stalemated conflict.
And frankly, it’s a proxy war between nuclear powers. Now the United States is helping Ukraine and Russia to end it.
And no one has an idea or a plan to end it. The plan right now from the Ukrainians, their allies on Capitol Hill, and the people you talk to in other countries is: Let’s just keep giving them as much as they need, as long as it takes. That’s not a strategy.”
Rubio then goes off-track a bit and returns to the “Russia-Ukraine” logic:
“Obviously, there were problems on the Russian side at the beginning of this conflict. They are the larger country. They have made some progress. But the Russians can’t just walk away from this conflict. So it’s a stalemate. That’s been explained to everyone. We’ve made that crystal clear. All the president is trying to do is figure out if there’s a path to peace. We have to engage both sides, the Russians and the Ukrainians.
And we’ve asked the Ukrainians not to sabotage that. When the Vice President said that diplomacy is going to be needed to solve problems like this, President Zelenskyy, unfortunately, made the decision to challenge the Vice President and start questioning whether diplomacy is even possible. That’s essentially sabotaging and undermining the president’s plan.
And that led to a spat. I’m glad to see that position reconsidered, because I truly believe that this is a conflict that we have to find a way to end. And that will require concessions from both sides. But we have to bring both sides to the table. The Ukrainians have to be there. Obviously, it’s their country. The Russians have to be at that table. And only President Trump can make that happen. That was the goal. And that remains the goal. And that’s what we’re focused on right now.” Before it says, “We’ve been dragged into an unnecessary war with the Russians,” half of it has been said: this is a proxy war that needs to stop. Kyiv, Europe, and American liberals (“Ukraine’s allies on Capitol Hill”) should not sabotage Trump’s peace plan. But the question is: what if? We’ll probably find out the answer to that question in the coming weeks.
